Music in Carrizozo this Sunday!

Carrizozo Music is pleased to present The Southwest Chamber Winds in concert at 3 PM on Sunday, August 30 at Trinity United Methodist Church in Carrizozo. Featuring woodwinds and piano, the group will play a Mozart piano quintet, a Handel concerto with English Horn, and chamber music by Delibes and Lickl. A reception and opportunity to meet the musicians will follow the concert. On Monday, August 31, at 10 AM, the group will perform at the Carrizozo Schcarrizozo music smool Old Gym for students in K-6. Both concerts are free and open to the public.

To reach both church and school from Route 54, turn West at 12th Street, between the 54 Emporium and Roy’s Ice Cream Parlor and go one block. Turn right onto D Ave and go two blocks to the corner of D Ave, and 10th Street.

Southwest Chamber Winds unites Las Cruces area professional wind players, plus a pianist, to play a variety of woodwind repertoire. The Carrizozo concerts will include Carl Fels on oboe and English horn, bassonist Page Bartz, pianist, Leah Houpt, David Ross on clarinet and Celeste Shearer on French horn. http://www.swchamberwinds.org/

Carl Fels toured extensively in the U.S. and the Orient as principal oboist with the Mantovani Orchestra. For a number of years he also played with the Symphony of the Americas in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. As a chamber musician, he has performed in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, as well as the U.S.

Page Bartz toured in the U.S. and the Orient as principal bassoonist with the Mantovani Orchestra. For five summers she also toured in Austria and Hungary with the Festival Orchestra of the 18th Century. Ms. Bartz has been very active as a chamber musician in the Dallas – Ft. Worth area since moving to New Mexico.

Leah Houpt has an extremely extensive background as a chamber musician, ranging from accompanying college choirs and instrumental masterclasses to working with soloists and performing with the El Paso Symphony. She also plays harpsichord and organ in Baroque – themed concerts with the Southwest Chamber Winds.

David Ross has been a featured performer at music festivals and conferences in Europe (England, Germany, and Switzerland) and in the U.S. He is also in much demand nationally and internationally as a clinician and lecturer. David is principal clarinet of the El Paso Symphony and has appeared often in local chamber music concerts.

Celeste Shearer received a fellowship to study with the Empire Brass Quintet at the Tanglewood Institute. She has performed with the Amarillo Symphony, the Lubbock Symphony, and the El Paso Symphony. Currently she plays french horn with the Roswell Symphony and is frequently in demand as a chamber musician.

September 29, 7 PM Willy Sucre and Friends, Beethoven String Quartet, Opus 95, Haydn’s “Surprise” Quartet. (3PM school concert)

October 19, Zuill Bailey and David Leisner, Music of Manual de Falla, and Schubert’s Arpeggione . (3PM school concert)
